That morning felt like Rothenburg was mine alone. I walked for hours past cobblestones and timber-framed houses with no crowds, no voices—just a light breeze and the first sounds of birds waking up. The clock tower stood over the quiet street, and the warm lamps were still on, holding onto the last seconds of night.
But the detail that made me smile most came later, when I studied the image closely: a stork perched beside its nest on the roof, almost as if it was watching me back. In my mind, it had just woken up too—calm, unbothered, and completely at home in this medieval town. That tiny moment is why this photograph is one of my favorites.
